Beautiful beaches, the warm sun, and the fantastic tropical breeze, it’s no surprise why Hawaii is one of the top destinations of people who love to travel, and I’m sure the Hawaiian Islands is on your travel bucket list. Not only are the islands’ beauty alluring, but there are also endless options of activities to do on the island.
Adrenaline seekers have several adventures to experience, from hiking and surfing to skydiving over the vast blue sea. For individuals looking for a more mellow experience, they may relax by the seashore or drive leisurely around the island.
However, the question remains, what is the best way to visit Hawaii? Is it by land or by cruise? Here are some of the pros and cons of each:
If you are a spontaneous traveler, visiting the island by land might be best for you. There are several islands to explore, and it will take you days, even weeks, to truly experience and go to every place even one island has to offer. Without being held down to the cruise ship’s schedule, you will be able to go out and island-hop on your own time and liking.
Since there will be no schedule to follow when you visit by land, you will be able to choose which events are more suitable for you and your companions. If you opt to spend more time in a particular activity, you may do so. You will also be able to experience the islanders’ culture and immerse fully in their life. By visiting by land, you’ll be able to meet and be guided by local tour guides who probably have more experience and are more knowledgeable about the island.
Unlike Mexico and many islands in the Caribbean, the resorts on the islands of Hawaii are NOT all-inclusive. Some offer a meal plan than can include breakfast but most will be ala carte which will add up.
More expensive
The cost of living in Hawaii is a bit high. Booking hotels, transportations, food, etc. might be more expensive than going on a cruise, where everything you need for the trip is already on the ship.
The freedom of choice when it comes to traveling comes with the hassle of planning it all by yourself. If you are with companions, you’ll have to consider them too, which will lead to compromises. Even with thousands of options, you might miss out on some activities that you might enjoy, especially if it’s your first time to go to Hawaii.
If you’re traveling to Hawaii on budget, you might consider visiting there by cruise. Since your hotel will be the cruise ship, you’ll be able to save more on inter-island flights when island hopping. You’ll also be saved from the pricey meals if you dine in a restaurant since it is already on-board. However, your expense will still depend on how you spend on shore excursions and purchases from specialty shops.
With a plan and a route laid out for you, you get to enjoy the trip entirely. You won’t have to go through the intricacies of planning the destinations you’ll visit, logistics, food, etc. If it is your first time to visit Hawaii, visiting by cruise might be better for you.
You came in a group; you’ll also leave in a group. You have limited mobility and will not be able to be spontaneous with your vacation. Most of the time, cruises have a shorter time in ports of call. If you’re late, your ship might leave you behind. It is mainly an inconvenience if you would love to extend your stay on an island or an activity, which might cause you not to enjoy the whole trip.
Although a Hawaiian cruise will be able to take you to several islands, you might not be able to undergo an authentic experience in the activities and places you visit. If you’re one for experiencing the culture of the places you go to, being on a cruise won’t allow you to do so. Cruises will take you to several places but with limited time only.
With this information, you will be able to decide which option is the best for you. It boils down to who you are and what you are looking for on a trip. After all, visiting the islands of Hawaii will always be worth it.
